Writing That First Paragraph

The first paragraph can be what makes a reader decide whether they want to keep reading or not. And while that might not be fair, it’s true. So how do you make your first paragraph the best that it can possibly be?

Well… it depends on the story. I always suggest a hook, line, and a sinker. You want to reel the reader in. How you do that may vary on the genre you’re writing. Maybe you start with a question. Maybe you start with dialogue. Maybe you write a prologue. There is no definite right way to write your first paragraph.

Don’t stress about it too much, though! Despite the first paragraph being immensely important, most readers won’t give up on you if the very first paragraph doesn’t draw them in. Most readers will give the author a little bit of a longer trial period than that.
