I know. It sounds like a ridiculous question. But a lot of times, people say, “I’ve never read a book where the characters are shown reading.” And for the most part, I’d say that’s a fairly true statement. And I’ve read a lot of books.
Unless the food is immensely important (or relevant) to the plot, characters, and/or the story, I don’t think that writing about characters eating is necessary.
For example, in my current manuscript, Clemency, food is important because it provides sufficient contrast between the upper and lower classes of the society, amplifying the visible effects of feudalism on pre-revolutionary France.
All in all, it’s your call. Do what’s best for your novel.
